Physical fitness is important to residents at Presbyterian Manor. Staying active can help prevent or lessen heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, dementia and more.

No matter your physical condition, you can take steps to improve your health. Numerous research studies show that it is possible for older adults to maintain or improve their strength, flexibility and physical conditioning.

Here are some examples:

  • When we’re strong enough, we can stand from a chair without help from others or lift a grandchild. Strength training results in stronger muscles.
  • Flexibility allows us to get dressed without assistance and reach for things on a shelf. Stretching aids in flexibility.
  • Being physically active can help you stay fit enough to keep doing the things you like as you get older. Aerobic exercise, like walking, can help build your endurance and overall physical conditioning.

Wellness Activities

The Centers for Disease Control cites a New Zealand study that found women 80 and older had 40 percent fewer falls with strength and balance training. Research shows strength training increases bone density and lowers the fracture risk in women older than 50.

Exercising also provides similar improvements in depression as anti-depressant medications. It isn’t known if this is because people feel better when they’re stronger or if strength training produces a helpful biochemical change in the brain. Our rehabilitation experts tell us it is most likely a combination of the two. When older adults participate in strength training programs, their self-confidence and self-esteem improve, which has a strong impact on their overall quality of life.

If you haven't been active in a while, be sure to visit with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Group activities scheduled regularly

Fulton Presbyterian Manor residents have an opportunity to take part in numerous individual and group activities each week.

Regularly scheduled group activities include:

  • Bocce blocks every Monday at 11 a.m. in the family room, located in the health care center area.
  • Fit-n-fun every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 11 a.m. in the family room.
  • Tai chi every Friday at 11 a.m. in the family room. This class includes gentle stretching exercises.
  • Assisted living residents may join in group exercise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1 p.m. in the kitchenette sitting room.

Residents who wish to pursue wellness on their own are welcome to try indoor walking, which starts every day at 8 a.m.
